Building Connections: Bringing the Past into Focus

Despite the economic prosperity brought along by the country’s rich oil reserves, the UAE’s first ruler, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who reigned from 1971 to 2004, recognized the vulnerability of the UAE’s reliance on an exhaustible resource. Sheikh Zayed initiated a series of public policy and infrastructure initiatives aimed at not only diversifying but also growing the UAE’s economy. Recognizing the importance of attracting foreign capital, these policies included religious tolerance and the adoption of moderate foreign policy. He also recognized the importance of protecting the natural environment, long before the concept of “sustainable development” became popular.
