World Café Process
Gulf SoL events, like the Shaybah
Café and The
Hawar Dialogue, employ the World Café process—a
method for fostering collaborative dialogue among large groups.
The process creates focused networks of conversation around critical
questions. Café conversations maximize a small group’s
ability to focus, think together, and come up with creative possibilities
and collective action. How
it works
Participants in a World Café are divided into groups of
four. Each group is seated around a small table and given a question
on which to focus. The group then carries on a conversation centered
on the question. After about 20 minutes, three people from each
group will switch tables, carrying with them the ideas from the
conversation they just had. One person will remain at each table
to host the next conversation there and capture the major insights.
After several café “rounds,” each table shares
their themes, insights, and learnings with the larger group.
The World Café process is based on the assumption that
people already have within them the wisdom and creativity to confront
even the most difficult challenges. This simple, practical methodology
has demonstrated a remarkable capacity to foster authentic conversation
and knowledge sharing among people of varied backgrounds and perspectives.
